Do you plan on using your camcorder to record family events? Are you intending to attempt to make your own film? If you plan on recording lots of your children's sport days you will want a camcorder with a sports mode. Likewise, if you're going to shoot a lot of your children's school plays you will want a good night vision for when you are in a dimly lit school hall.

Your budgetary restraints?
Do you want to spend $100 or $1000 on your camcorder? If there were a much better camcorder for $50 more would you spend slightly more money than you originally planned? In some cases the price difference can just be for a better resolution, in others it can be tons of better features for not much more money. Quick to Learn or Fancy Features?
